Un peu plus rigoureux:

  1. démarrer l’ordi
  2. lsmod
  3. modprobe mga
  4. lsmod

Ton module mga n’est pas chargé d’après lsmod, donc j’en conclue qu’il ne l’est que lorsque tu le charges manuellement.

J’avoue qu’on fait peut-être fausse route depuis un moment. Peux-tu rappeller quel est le problème que tu as avec ton affichage ?

Ouaip, mais Gnome nécessite une certaine version d’OpenGL, et je pense que ça marchera jamais sur ta Matrox.

Moi je ne suis pas raciste, Gnome ou autre, je ne recherche pas de tralala, les appli inutiles(les 3/4 de ce que que je vois sur le bureau)… le principal serait d’avoir un affichage correct… mais bon s’il faut s’en contenter…

Tu peux tenter XFCE.

Mais les ralentissements que tu constates sont un peu étranges malgré tout.
Donc je me demande si ton Xorg ne tourne pas en VESA plutôt qu’avec le driver Matrox.

Joins au forum l’intégralité de ton fichier [mono]/var/log/Xorg.0.log[/mono].

On dirait que c’est bel et bien ton pilote MGA qui est actif. Donc pas certain que tu puisses faire mieux à l’égard de ton driver.

En quoi est-il insatisfaisant hormis qu’il ne démarre pas bien Gnome 3 ? Résolution trop faible ? Peu réactif ?

Ta machine est peut-être un peu vieille aussi.

Non, les 2 peuvent s’installer en parallèle.

XFCE te remplacera peut-être GDM par LightDM (que je n’aime pas, perso, lui préférant SLIM)

Aux dernières nouvelles, Xfce est resté léger et non contraigant. Ca m’étonnerait que le projet se mette à dépendre d’un DM en particulier.
Le paquet xfce4 installe le minimum. Pour avoir un environnement un peu plus complet, xfce4-goodies est un must (terminal,bloc-note,gestion de l’energie,…).
